Rene Requiestas

Rene Requiestas
Renato "Rene" Rabago Requiestas
 (January 22, 1957 – July 24, 1993) \
was a Filipino actor and comedian. Requiestas was one of the top Filipino comedians of the late 1980s up to the early 1990s.
Requiestas was known for his sidekick roles alongside other comedy actors such as Joey de Leon and his pairing with Kris Aquino in romantic comedies, as well as his distinctive gaunt, toothless appearance.
Requiestas died on July 24, 1993 at the age of 36.

A product of theater, his passport to fame was via the post-EDSa satire Sic O’clock News.
When Joey de Leon got him to play Chee-tae in the Starzanseries, Rene became a very popular comedic figure and eventually starred in his own movies.
Pido/Dida with Kris Aquino was a blockbuster hit.
His toilet humor, of course, was denounced by the more proper sector of society. Rene merely laughed his way – toothless at that – to the bank.
He lived life to the fullest and in style – complete with a retinue of hangers-on. Eventually, he mismanaged his finances and got sick.
He died in the mid-’90s after enjoying half a decade of almost unequaled popularity.

Tange ( 193 - 1981)

Tange
His name obviously came from tanga (dumb), but stupid he certainly was not because Tange was one of the wittiest comedians local show business ever had.
His big break came via Super Laff-ins in the old ABS-CBN and from there he did other comedy shows – like Wanted: Boarders where he was houseboy to the family of Pugo and Patsy.
Tange was great at delivering punchlines. In one Wanted: Boarders episode, he was trying to get inside a nightclub when he was stopped at the entrance for wearing only a collarless shirt. (This was the era when dress codes were still strictly followed.) His retort to that: “Yung iba nga, nakasando lang, sumasayaw pa sa TV.” That may not have sounded so funny on print, but the way Tange delivered it really brought the house down.
Tange also did a couple of films during his career and one of the comedies he did was Buntis V, a parody of Voltes V.
In the early ’80s, he became sickly and had a minor speech impairment. He died in 1981 a poor man.
To this day, the young generation still uses the word tange as an expression. But how many of them know the great comedian that was Tange?

Isko Moreno (1974 - )

Francisco Moreno Domagoso (born October 24, 1974) is a Filipino politician. He is the 27th mayor and a former Vice Mayor of the City of Manila, the capital city of the Philippines; and a former three-term councilor of the city's first congressional district. He is also a former actor, using the screen name Isko Moreno, who started as a matinee idol and later became known for his mature roles in the "Titillating Films" genre that was prevalent in the country during the 1990s

Domagoso is the only child of Joaquin Domagoso (a stevedore at Manila's North Harbor) and Rosario Moreno (from Allen, Northern Samar). He found alternative sources of income at the age of 10 by pushing a cart and going house-to-house to gather old newspapers and used bottles, then reselling them at a local junk dealer.[3] He also rummaged through restaurant garbage bins for leftover food, which his mother would recook for dinner

Domagoso caught the attention of talent scout Wowie Roxas in 1993 while attending a funeral in Tondo and was then persuaded to join show business. He was part of That's Entertainment, a daily variety show featuring German Moreno's stable of aspiring teenage actors, under the screen name Isko Moreno. His major break came in 1993 when he was cast in a cameo role in the romantic movie May Minamahal and became a leading man to Claudine Barretto in Muntik na Kitang Minahal a year later.

He appeared in Siya'y Nagdadalaga, and has appeared in movies such as Exploitation, Mga Babae sa Isla Azul and Misteryosa .

In 2005, during his third term as a councilor of Manila, he returned to acting as a kind-hearted priest in the television drama series Mga Anghel na Walang Langit . He also had a brief appearance in 2007 in the television drama series Bakekang. The following year during his first term as vice mayor, Moreno had a supporting role in the afternoon soap opera Ligaw na Bulaklak.
Moreno started his political career when he elected and sworn as councilor for Manila's first congressional district in 1998 and reelected in 2001 and 2004 respectively. In 2007, he later became vice mayor of the city. He took a crash course in Local Legislation and Local Finance at University of the Philippines. He then studied public administration in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (University of the City of Manila) while fulfilling his alderman duties.

During his election campaign, he criticised what he called a "black propaganda" by opponents, but did not pursue any charges. Domagoso eventually won the elections, beating the closest rival by about 80,000 votes.

Moreno also serves as vice chairman of the Manila Historical and Heritage Commission and studies Law in Arellano University.

In May 2012, Joseph Estrada, the former President of the Philippines, announced his intention to run for Mayor of Manila but only for one term in 2013. He intends to run with Domagoso, who is running for re-election as Vice Mayor.

Estrada said, "I’m done with the presidency in Malacañang. Now, I will be moving to the city hall of Manila." He drove his famous “Jeep ni Erap” from San Juan to his new house at Altura, Sta. Mesa, Manila to ceremonially launch his candidacy. He was joined by his wife, former Senator Loi Ejercito and the Manila Vice Mayor. At least 25 of the 28 Manila councilors who were inducted last week as members of Estrada’s Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino, joined them in welcoming him.

Domagoso said Manileños welcome Estrada and his wife, adding that they will try to make their stay in Manila comfortable.“We are humbled that the former president of the Philippines will live and stay in Manila,” Moreno said. “We are thankful he had chosen Manila,” he added.

On February 16, 2013, Domagoso and other five councilors was arrested by the police, due to alleged bingo operations held in a public place, Moreno denied the bingo game is in the public place in Sta. Cruz, Manila, and he believe that Mayor Lim was involved in his arrest, and the bingo game is not illegal, the day before Lim and Estrada signed a "Peace Covenant" to prevent any election related violence in the City of Manila.

In 2016, Domagaso announced that he would run for Senator of the Philippines. He lost in his bid placing 15th place overall.

On July 2017, President Rodrigo Duterte appointed him as the chairman of the board of the North Luzon Railways Corporation (NorthRail) until his resignation in October 2017.[10] In May 2018, he was appointed by Duterte as Undersecretary for Luzon Affairs at the Department of Social Welfare and Development. On October 11, 2018, he officially resigned from his post to run for Mayor of Manila in the 2019 elections.

On May 13, 2019, Isko Domagoso Moreno won the mayoralty of Manila, over incumbent Joseph "Erap" Estrada via a landslide win of close to 150,000 votes more than the closest contender. Mayor Moreno was then officially proclaimed winner by the City Board of Canvassers the following day, 14 May.

Joseph Estrada conceded defeat also on the evening of 13 May.

He is married to his non-celebrity girlfriend, Diana Lynn Ditan since 2000. They have five children, Vincent Patrick (born 1998), Frances Diane (born 2000), Joaquín André (born 2001), Franco Dylan (born 2006), and Drake Marcus (born 2012)

Apeng Daldal (October 12, 1928 – February 9, 1992)

Apeng Daldal

Like most comedians in those days, Apeng – known for his big set of teeth and his being a fast talker (Daldal) – started in vaudeville where he was a dancer. He honed his dancing skills, however, in the regular “pasayaw ng mga bakla” in his Tondo neighborhood where he was a favorite male dancing partner of post-war cross-dressers. From stage shows, he also ventured into film (with Gina Pareño as leading lady) and television. His most memorable performance for me, however, was in an episode of Eliza(Boots Anson Roa’s drama anthology in the old BBC-2) where he played the personal assistant of a powerful man (Arnold Mendoza). In the story, Mendoza is married to Boots, but has a mistress (Coney Nubla – later to become Coney Reyes) he treats shabbily. After getting Coney pregnant, he dumps her, she loses the baby and dies during the miscarriage. Secretly in love with Coney, Apeng avenges her death by killing Mendoza.
With Apeng’s excellent performance in that Eliza episode, I really started to get convinced that great comedians also make good dramatic actors.
Apeng Daldal died in 1992.

Togo

Togo

Togo – The sparring partner of Pugo, they started out as the Laurel Hardy and Stan Laurel of the Philippines. In the ’30s, they did stage shows and branched out into films before the war. Among the films they made in the early ’40s were Utos ng Hari, Hindi Mababali, Sa Lumang Simbahan and Binibiro Lamang Kita.
Andres Solomon in real life, he had to change his name to Tuging (Pugo became Puging) during the war years because Togo almost sounded like Tojo, the name of the Japanese Admiral stationed in the Philippines.
In one of their sketches on stage during the war, they did a parody on Japanese soldiers by wearing several wristwatches on their arms and even on their legs. During that dark period of our history, members of the Japanese Imperial Army were notorious for confiscating wristwatches from civilians and wearing them on their arms all at the same time. Pugo and Togo aped this on stage and was a hit with the audience. Supposedly, they were brought to Fort Santiago for questioning.
After the war, the comic duo resumed their film career and did several movies for LVN Pictures: Tambol Mayor (co-starring Jaime de la Rosa and Tessie Quintana, their first picture with LVN), Dalawang Prinsipeng Kambal, Magkumpareng Putik (with Lilia Dizon), Edong Mapangarap (with Eddie San Jose), Ang Kandidato, Nagsaulian ng Kandila, Dalawang Sundalong Kanin and Biglang Yaman. My personal favorites, however, were those films they did with Hollywood starlet Joan Page.
Togo could have been an even bigger name in the field of comedy had he not died in 1952.
